Discovering Korean Beauty: A Beginner's Guide to Your Everyday Routine

What is K-Beauty?

K-beauty refers to Korean skincare and cosmetics. Essentially all things beauty that originate from South Korea. Over the many years, K-beauty has grown in popularity worldwide due to their innovative products, and emphasis on skincare routines, including the unique approach to the ‘layering and multi-step routine’ to achieving your desire of having healthy, glowing skin!

Understanding Your Skin Type

K-beauty encourages customisation of skincare routines based on individual skin types and concerns. Identifying your skin type before starting your skincare routine is important as it allows you to choose products to develop a regimen that addresses your skin's specific needs and concerns effectively.

So what skin type am I?

There are generally four types of skin;

1. Normal Skin

-Balanced skin type with neither excessive dryness nor oiliness.

-Even texture and tone.

-Minimal sensitivity.

2. Dry Skin

-Often feels tight, especially after cleansing.
-Dull complexion.
-Flaky or rough texture.
-Benefits from rich, hydrating skincare products.

3. Oily Skin

-Appears shiny, especially in the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin).

-Prone to acne, blackheads, and whiteheads due to excess sebum production.

-Benefits from oil-controlling and mattifying skin care products.

4. Combination Skin

-Exhibits characteristics of both oily, dry skin OR sensitivities

-Typically, the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) is oily, while cheeks may be dry or normal/sensitive

-Requires balancing products to address different areas of the face.

You can identify your skin type by observing how your skin feels, looks, and reacts to different environments and products. Once you have identified what category your skin falls under, you will be on the path to achieving effective results.

Step 1: Double Cleansing

Double cleansing involves using two different types of cleansers to thoroughly cleanse the skin. The first method involves using an Oil-based cleanser, followed by using a water-based cleanser.

Let’s break down the two steps involved in double cleansing:

First: Oil-based cleansing :

  • The first step uses an oil-based cleanser which has a thicker and rich consistency (often referred to as a cleansing oil or balm),
  • Oil-based cleansers are helpful at breaking down and dissolving oil-based impurities on the skin, such as makeup, sunscreen, and excess sebum.
  • Oil-based cleansers are applied to dry skin and massaged gently to melt away makeup and impurities. They are then emulsified lightly with water and rinsed off.

Second: Water-based cleansing :

  • After removing the oil-based impurities, the second step involves using a water-based cleanser (typically a foaming or gel cleanser).
  • Water-based cleansers are designed to remove water-based impurities such as sweat, dirt, and any left-over residual cleanser from the first step.
  • Water-based cleansers are applied to damp skin, lathered up, and then rinsed off thoroughly.

Step 2: Exfoliation

Exfoliation is a key component in K-beauty routines because it plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy, glowing skin by removing dead skin cells and promoting skin renewal. Depending on your skin condition, you generally only need to exfoliate one to two times per week as you want to avoid damaging your skin barrier! There are two types of exfoliation methods you can choose from;

Physical Exfoliation

This method uses abrasive products or tools to physically scrub away dead skin cells, revealing smoother and brighter skin underneath.

Chemical Exfoliation

Chemical exfoliation is a skincare technique that involves using chemical-based substances that are known as acids or enzymes which help dissolve away dead skin cells to reveal smoother, brighter skin. Unlike physical exfoliation we mentioned above, which involves scrubbing away dead skin cells manually, chemical exfoliation can be applied directly onto your skin without having to wash it off.

Step 3: Toning

Prepping the skin with a toner after cleansing allows your skin to be restored back to its natural pH balance. Toners also pick up any traces of oil, dirt and even makeup left behind after cleansing. Overall, toners have a supportive role in a skincare routine, restoring balance and preparing your skin for optimal absorption for the rest of your skincare products.

Here are some key factors to look for when choosing a toner based on your skin type:

For Dry or Sensitive Skin:
Recommended ingredients: hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramides, niacinamide, peptides, centella asiatica, aloe vera.
For Oily or Combination Skin:
Recommended ingredients: Witch hazel, salicylic acid, glycolic acid

General Tips for All Skin Types:

pH-Balanced: select toners that are pH-balanced to support your skin’s natural acid mantle to prevent any disruption to the barrier of the skin

  1. Multi-function: Most toners in K-beauty offer additional benefits such as brightening, anti-ageing or acne-fighting properties. So consider your skin concerns when selecting a toner.
  2. By carefully selecting a toner that is tailored to your specific skin concern and skin type, you can enhance your skincare routine to achieve healthier and balanced skin over time.

Step 4: Essence, Serums, and Ampoules

In K-beauty skincare routines, essences, serums and ampoules are highly valued for their functions and benefits by targeting specific concerns with concentrated ingredients. Incorporating one of these products into your regimen can contribute to achieving healthy radiant skin over time.

Essence:

  • Purpose: these are lightweight and hydrating liquids designed to provide an extra layer of moisture and sets the skin. They are lightweight in nature.
  • Benefits: hydration, nourishment, improved skin texture

Serum:

  • Purpose: serums are moderately concentrated formulas that are catered to target your specific skin concerns e.g.; dark spots, dullness, and wrinkles.
  • Benefits: targeted treatment using a high concentration of active ingredients, anti-ageing, brightening, and deep hydration.

Ampoule:

  • Purpose: ampoules are highly concentrated formulas that deliver a much more potent dose of active ingredients to address specific skin needs effectively.
  • Benefits: intensive treatment, fast results, enhanced skin barrier.

Step 5: Moisturise

Moisturising is an important step in all skincare routine for several reasons:

  1. Hydration: moisturisers provide essential hydration to the skin to replenish any moisture that has been lost throughout the day or from environmental factors.
  1. Preparation for Makeup: moisturised skin allows a smooth canvas for your makeup applications, helping your foundation and concealer to have a more radiant finish.

Choosing moisturisers in K-beauty involves considering your skin type, concerns, and the specific benefits each product offers. By incorporating moisturisers into your morning and night skincare routine, you can effectively protect, and rejuvenate your skin around the clock, promoting a healthy and glowing complexion.

Step 6: Sun Protection

Sun protection holds significant importance in your morning routine as it provides protection against UV damage which can cause sunburns, premature ageing, and hyperpigmentation. Applying sunscreen as the last step in your routine maintains your overall skin health and integrity.  K-beauty sunscreens are formulated to be lightweight, non-greasy and easier to apply, making them suitable for daily use under makeup

Conclusion

Starting with these simple steps will help you establish a solid foundation for a K-beauty skincare routine. Focusing on hydration, gentle exfoliation, moisture and protection will help lead you to have a more healthier and glowing skin. Remember, maintaining consistency is key in your routine. Stick to your routine daily in order to see noticeable results and improvement in your skin’s health and appearance
